Calci-K®

CalciK-1200 x 800
Calci-K® is a specialized complex of calcium, potassium, & phosphorus, formulated for complete dispersion in liquids without additional agents.

Common foods and beverages typically reduce the absorbability of added calcium.  The absorption of Calci-K® is unique, as research results found that the absorption rate is not reduced when taken with milk.

Specifically designed to fortify liquid food products, Calci-K® blends calcium, potassium, and phosphorus molecules into an easily absorbed complex when taken with milk.

Also able to maintain complete dispersion in liquids at a pH between 3.5–8.0.  No additional suspending agents are required.

Delivery Applications

  • Infant Formulas
  • Soy Based Products
  • Products with Neutral pH
  • Dairy and Imitation Dairy Products
  • Liquids, Including Fresh Milk, Soy Milk, and Apple Juice

Activated Carbon

Activated carbon, also known as activated charcoal, is a versatile material with unique characteristics that make it widely used in various applications.  It is produced by heating carbon-rich materials, such as wood, peat, coconut shells, or sawdust, in the presence of a gas that does not react with the material, creating a porous structure.

Characteristics of Activated Carbon

  • High Surface Area: One of the key features of activated carbon is its extremely high surface area.  The porous structure of activated carbon provides a large internal surface area, typically ranging from 500 to 1500 square meters per gram.  This extensive surface area allows for the adsorption of a wide range of substances.
  • Adsorption Capacity: Activated carbon has a strong adsorption capacity, meaning it can attract and hold molecules onto its surface.  This property is crucial for various applications, particularly in the purification of liquids and gases. The adsorption process is highly effective in removing impurities, contaminants, and odors.
  • Pore Structure: The porous nature of activated carbon is characterized by a distribution of different pore sizes, including micropores, mesopores, and macropores. This diverse pore structure enhances its ability to adsorb a wide range of molecules with different sizes.
  • Chemical Inertness: Activated carbon is chemically inert, making it stable and safe for use in various environments.  It does not react with most chemicals, contributing to its suitability for applications where purity is crucial.
  • Regenerability: In many cases, activated carbon can be regenerated and reused after reaching its adsorption capacity.  The regeneration process involves heating the spent activated carbon to release or decompose the adsorbed substances, restoring its adsorption capabilities.

Uses of Activated Carbon

  • Water Treatment: Activated carbon is extensively used in water treatment processes to remove impurities, organic contaminants, and pollutants.  It effectively adsorbs chlorine, disinfection by-products, pesticides, and other organic compounds, enhancing the quality of drinking water.
  • Air Purification: Activated carbon is employed in air purification systems to eliminate volatile organic compounds (VOCs), odors, and airborne contaminants.  It is commonly found in air filters for homes, cars, and industrial facilities.
  • Medical and Pharmaceutical Applications: Activated carbon is used in medical settings to treat poisoning and drug overdoses.  It can adsorb toxins in the gastrointestinal tract, preventing their absorption into the bloodstream. Additionally, it is used in gas masks to filter out harmful chemicals.
  • Food and Beverage Processing: Activated carbon plays a crucial role in the food and beverage industry for decolorization, deodorization, and removal of contaminants.  It is commonly used in the production of sugar, edible oils, and alcoholic beverages.
  • Environmental Remediation: Activated carbon is employed in environmental remediation efforts to treat soil and groundwater contaminated with pollutants.  It can adsorb heavy metals, organic chemicals, and other contaminants, mitigating their impact on the environment.
  • Gold Recovery: In the mining industry, activated carbon is utilized for gold recovery through a process called carbon-in-pulp (CIP).  The porous structure of activated carbon adsorbs gold from cyanide solutions, facilitating the extraction of gold from ore.
  • Gas Purification: Activated carbon is used to purify gases by adsorbing impurities, such as sulfur compounds, volatile organic compounds, and other contaminants.  This is crucial in industrial processes and gas-phase applications.
In summary, activated carbon’s remarkable characteristics, including its high surface area, adsorption capacity, and chemical inertness, make it a versatile material with applications ranging from water and air purification to medical treatments and environmental remediation.  Its widespread use across various industries underscores its effectiveness in addressing diverse challenges related to purification and adsorption.

Definition

Activated Carbon is a porous adsorbent material presenting a large interior surface area in a range of 600 to 1,500 m2/g which allows the adsorption of a great number of substances from gaseous or liquid phases.

Characteristic of activated carbon

Not all pores are equivalent:

  • some pores allow good molecule transport
  • some pores offer “parking” places for the adsorptive
